Overview

What is Hypospadias?

Hypospadias is a congenital condition in which the opening of the urethra is located on the underside of the penis instead of at the tip. The position can vary from just below the tip to further down the penile shaft, depending on the severity of the condition.

Some patients may also have downward penile curvature (chordee), an incompletely formed foreskin, or an abnormal urinary stream. The severity and anatomy of hypospadias can differ significantly from one patient to another.

Important: Hypospadias treatment should be planned after a detailed examination by an experienced reconstructive urologist. Surgery may involve correcting the urethral opening, straightening penile curvature and reconstructing the urethra. Complex or previously failed hypospadias cases may require specialised reconstructive techniques.

Causes

What Causes Hypospadias?

Genetic & Family Factors

A family history of hypospadias may increase the chances of developing the condition.

Hormonal Development

Changes in hormone activity during fetal development can affect normal penile and urethral formation.

Pregnancy Factors

Certain maternal health conditions and pregnancy-related factors may be associated with a higher risk.

Assisted Reproduction

Some studies suggest a possible link between assisted reproductive techniques and hypospadias.

Environmental Factors

Exposure to certain environmental influences during pregnancy may contribute to the condition.

Cause Often Unknown

In many cases, no single exact cause is found, and multiple genetic and developmental factors may be involved.

Diagnosis

How We Diagnose Hypospadias

A detailed physical examination helps assess the urethral opening, penile curvature, foreskin and overall anatomy to determine the type and severity of hypospadias.

  • Urethral Opening Assessment – checks the position and size of the opening.
  • Penile Curvature Check – evaluates the presence and severity of chordee.
  • Foreskin Examination – checks for incomplete or hooded foreskin.
  • Previous Surgery Assessment – important in failed or recurrent hypospadias cases.

Yes. It may be classified according to where the urethral opening is located—from near the tip to the penile shaft, scrotal area or, rarely, the perineum.

It is usually diagnosed through a physical examination of the urethral opening, penile curvature, foreskin and genital anatomy.

Treatment depends on the severity and anatomy. Many cases require surgical correction, while specialist evaluation determines whether surgery is appropriate.
