Overview

What is Peyronie’s Disease?

Peyronie’s disease is a condition in which fibrous scar tissue, known as a plaque, develops within the penis. This can cause abnormal curvature, pain, shortening or changes in penile shape during erection.

Penile curvature may also be congenital, meaning it has been present since development rather than being caused by Peyronie’s disease. Proper evaluation helps distinguish between these conditions and determine whether treatment is required.

Important: Mild curvature does not always require treatment. However, increasing curvature, painful erections, difficulty during intercourse or associated erectile dysfunction should be evaluated by a specialist. Treatment depends on whether the condition is active or stable and how much it affects sexual function.

Causes

What Causes Peyronie’s Disease & Penile Curvature?

Scar Tissue Formation

Abnormal healing can lead to development of fibrous plaque inside the penis.

Penile Injury

Repeated minor trauma or penile injury may contribute to scar tissue formation.

Genetic Factors

Some men may have a greater tendency to develop abnormal fibrous tissue.

Connective Tissue

Peyronie’s disease may occur alongside conditions involving abnormal scar tissue

Congenital Curvature

Some men are born with penile curvature that becomes more noticeable during erections.

Cause May Be Unknown

In many patients, there is no clear history of a specific injury or identifiable trigger.

Diagnosis

How We Diagnose Peyronie’s Disease

A detailed evaluation helps assess the location of the plaque, degree of curvature, penile length, erectile function and impact on sexual activity.

  • Medical & Sexual History – Evaluates duration, pain, progression of curvature and difficulty during intercourse.
  • Physical Examination  – Checks for penile plaques, deformity and other associated conditions.
  • Curvature Assessment – Photographs or a medically induced erection may be used to accurately measure the degree and direction of curvature.
  • Penile Doppler Ultrasound – May be advised in selected patients to assess penile blood flow, erectile dysfunction or vascular anatomy before certain procedures.

Treatment

Treatment Options at Urethra & Penile Surgery

01

Conservative Management

During the active phase, selected patients may be managed with observation, pain management and other conservative approaches depending on their symptoms.

02

Penile Traction Therapy

A penile traction device may be considered in selected patients to help manage penile length and curvature. Treatment suitability depends on the individual condition.

03

Intralesional Treatment

For selected cases, medication may be injected directly into the penile plaque as part of non-surgical management. The appropriate option depends on plaque characteristics and curvature.

04

Penile Curvature Surgery

For stable disease with significant deformity that interferes with sexual intercourse, surgical correction may be considered. Surgical options can include plication, plaque incision/grafting or penile prosthesis surgery when significant erectile dysfunction is also present.
