Overview

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Low-Intensity Shockwave Therapy (Li-SWT) is a non-invasive treatment used in selected men with erectile dysfunction, particularly when reduced penile blood flow is considered an important cause of the problem. Low-intensity acoustic waves are delivered to different areas of the penis using a specialized device.

The treatment is intended to stimulate biological responses within penile tissue and may support blood-vessel function and penile blood flow. Unlike medicines that are taken around the time of intercourse, shockwave therapy is aimed at improving the underlying vascular component of erectile function in appropriately selected patients.

The procedure does not involve surgical incisions, implants or injections and is generally performed as an outpatient treatment. The number and frequency of sessions depend on the treatment protocol and individual clinical assessment.

Important: Shockwave therapy is not suitable for every type of erectile dysfunction, and results vary between patients. Proper evaluation is essential to identify whether the erectile dysfunction is predominantly vascular and whether the patient may benefit from this treatment.

Indications

Who May Consider Shockwave Therapy?

Mild to Moderate Erectile Dysfunction

Selected men with mild or moderate erectile dysfunction, particularly when reduced penile blood flow is suspected.

Vasculogenic Erectile Dysfunction

Patients whose erectile dysfunction is primarily related to vascular problems affecting blood supply to the penis may be considered after specialist evaluation.

Poor Response to ED Medicines

Some men who achieve an incomplete or inconsistent response to medicines such as sildenafil or tadalafil may be evaluated for shockwave therapy.

Preference for Non-Invasive Treatment

Men who want to explore a treatment that does not involve surgery, penile injections or implantation may discuss shockwave therapy with their specialist.

Erectile Quality Has Gradually Declined

Patients experiencing a gradual reduction in erection firmness or maintenance may require vascular assessment to determine whether treatment could be appropriate.

Selected Patients with Medical Risk Factors

Men with conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or cardiovascular risk factors may develop vascular erectile dysfunction and should undergo proper medical assessment before treatment.

Evaluation

How We Evaluate Before Shockwave Therapy

Before recommending shockwave therapy, Dr. Gautam Banga evaluates the possible cause and severity of erectile dysfunction to determine whether the patient is an appropriate candidate.

Evaluation may include:

  • Medical & Sexual History – assessment of erection quality, duration of symptoms, sexual function and previous ED treatments.
  • Physical Examination – evaluation of penile and genital anatomy and identification of any associated abnormalities.
  • ED Severity Assessment – erectile function may be assessed using standardized clinical questions or scoring systems.
  • Blood Tests – blood sugar, testosterone, lipid profile or other investigations may be advised depending on the patient’s condition.
  • Penile Doppler Ultrasound – may be recommended in selected patients to evaluate arterial inflow and penile vascular function.
  • Medication Review – certain medicines and medical conditions can contribute to erectile dysfunction and should be assessed.
  • Cardiovascular Risk Assessment – because erectile dysfunction can sometimes be associated with underlying vascular disease.
  • Treatment Counselling – discussion of expected benefits, limitations, available alternatives and realistic expectations.

Shockwave Therapy Treatment Options

01

Low-Intensity Shockwave Therapy

Low-intensity acoustic waves are delivered to selected areas of the penis using a specialized hand-held device.

02

Multi-Session Treatment Protocol

Shockwave therapy is generally performed over multiple treatment sessions rather than as a single procedure.

03

Shockwave Therapy With ED Medicines

In selected patients, shockwave therapy may be used alongside prescribed erectile dysfunction medicines such as PDE5 inhibitors when clinically appropriate.

04

Personalized ED Management

If shockwave therapy is unlikely to provide sufficient benefit, other erectile dysfunction treatment options may be discussed, including lifestyle modification, medicines, vacuum erection devices, penile injections or penile prosthesis surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Low-Intensity Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment in which low-intensity acoustic waves are applied to penile tissue. It is mainly considered in selected patients with erectile dysfunction where impaired penile blood flow is believed to be an important contributing factor.

The acoustic waves are intended to produce controlled mechanical stimulation within penile tissue. This may promote biological processes associated with vascular function and blood flow.

Clinical response varies considerably between patients.

The treatment may be considered in selected men with mild to moderate vasculogenic erectile dysfunction and in some men who respond poorly to oral ED medicines.

A specialist assessment is necessary because not every type of erectile dysfunction is vascular.

Treatment uses low-intensity energy and is generally well tolerated. Some patients may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity during treatment, but anaesthesia is usually not required.

Shockwave therapy is usually provided as a series of sessions rather than a single treatment. The exact protocol depends on the device being used, clinical assessment and treatment plan.

Dr. Gautam Banga will recommend an appropriate schedule after evaluating the patient.

Shockwave therapy does not usually produce an immediate erection or instant improvement. When patients respond, changes in erectile function may develop gradually over the weeks or months following treatment.

Individual results can vary.

No treatment should be presented as a guaranteed permanent cure for erectile dysfunction.

Some patients may experience improvement following low-intensity shockwave therapy, while others may experience limited or no meaningful benefit. Long-term durability of benefit can also vary.

Not necessarily. Some patients may still require medicines such as sildenafil or tadalafil.

For selected patients, shockwave therapy may be used alongside ED medicines according to the doctor's recommendation.

No. Shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction is intended to address erectile function and penile vascular health. It should not be promoted as a penis enlargement treatment.

Results may be less predictable in severe erectile dysfunction, particularly when significant nerve damage or advanced vascular disease is present.

Other options such as medicines, injections, vacuum erection devices or penile prosthesis surgery may be more appropriate depending on the patient's condition.
