Overview
What is Cystoscopy?
Cystoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows the doctor to directly examine the inside of the urethra and bladder using a thin instrument called a cystoscope.
The cystoscope contains a light and camera that provides a detailed view of the urinary passage. It can help identify urethral narrowing, bladder abnormalities, stones, inflammation, bleeding sources and other structural problems that may not be fully assessed through scans alone.
Cystoscopy may be performed using a flexible or rigid cystoscope depending on the reason for examination and whether any additional procedure is required.
Important: Cystoscopy is not required for every urinary problem. It is advised when symptoms, previous investigations or medical history suggest that direct visualization of the urethra or bladder would help establish the diagnosis or guide treatment.
Indications
Who May Need Cystoscopy?
Weak Urinary Stream
Persistent weak, slow or interrupted urine flow may require evaluation for urethral narrowing, prostate-related obstruction or other causes.
Blood in Urine
Visible or unexplained microscopic blood in the urine may require cystoscopy as part of a complete urological evaluation.
Suspected Urethral Stricture
Cystoscopy can directly identify narrowing, scarring or obstruction within the urethra.
Recurrent Urinary Infections
Repeated urinary tract infections may require further investigation for bladder stones, obstruction or structural abnormalities.
Difficulty Passing Urine
Straining, incomplete emptying or urinary retention may require endoscopic assessment.
Bladder Abnormalities
Cystoscopy may help investigate bladder stones, growths, inflammation or other abnormalities detected on imaging or suspected clinically.

Evaluation
How We Evaluate Before Cystoscopy
Before cystoscopy, Dr. Gautam Banga reviews the patient’s urinary symptoms, previous investigations and medical history to determine why the procedure is required.
Evaluation may include:
- Medical History – assessment of urinary symptoms, previous infections, surgeries and catheterisation.
- Urine Test – may be performed to check for urinary infection or blood.
- Uroflowmetry – measures the speed and pattern of urinary flow.
- Ultrasound KUB & PVR – evaluates kidneys, bladder and residual urine after urination.
- Previous Imaging Review – ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, RGU or MCU may be reviewed when available.
- Medication Review – particularly blood-thinning medicines or drugs that may affect the procedure.
- Urethral History – important in patients with previous urethral stricture, trauma or reconstruction.
- Procedure Counselling – explanation of the purpose, technique, expected discomfort and possible risks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Cystoscopy is an endoscopic procedure used to examine the inside of the urethra and bladder with a thin camera called a cystoscope.
It may be performed to investigate blood in urine, weak urinary flow, recurrent infections, suspected urethral stricture, bladder abnormalities or unexplained urinary symptoms.
Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed using local anaesthetic gel and may cause temporary pressure or mild discomfort rather than severe pain.
Individual experience varies.
A flexible cystoscope bends as it passes through the urethra and is commonly used for diagnostic examination.
A rigid cystoscope is straight and provides a larger channel for certain procedures, biopsies or additional treatment.
A straightforward diagnostic cystoscopy is generally a short procedure.
The total time may be longer if biopsy, treatment or another endoscopic procedure is performed at the same time.
Flexible diagnostic cystoscopy is often performed using local anaesthetic gel.
Rigid or operative cystoscopy may require regional or general anaesthesia depending on the planned procedure.
Yes.
Cystoscopy allows direct visualization of the urethral passage and can identify narrowed or scarred areas.
Additional tests such as RGU or MCU may still be required to determine the full length and anatomy of a stricture before reconstructive surgery.
Cystoscopy can identify suspicious growths or abnormal areas inside the bladder.
If an abnormal lesion is found, biopsy or further testing may be required to establish a diagnosis.
Cystoscopy mainly examines the urethra and bladder.
Kidney conditions are generally assessed using urine tests, ultrasound, CT scans or other investigations.
A small amount of blood or pink-coloured urine may occur temporarily after cystoscopy.
Heavy bleeding, blood clots or persistent bleeding should be reported to the doctor.
