What is a Penile Prosthesis / Implant?
A penile prosthesis, also known as a penile implant, is a medical device surgically placed inside the penis to help a man achieve an erection firm enough for sexual activity. It is generally considered when erectile dysfunction does not respond adequately to other treatments or when those treatments cannot be used.
There are two main types of penile implants: inflatable implants and malleable or semi-rigid implants. The appropriate implant depends on the patient’s medical condition, anatomy, lifestyle, hand function, previous surgeries and personal preference.
A penile implant creates mechanical rigidity for intercourse. It does not increase sexual desire and is not designed to increase penis size. In appropriately selected patients, sensation and the ability to achieve orgasm are generally not directly affected by the device.
Important: Penile implant surgery is usually considered after a complete evaluation of erectile dysfunction and discussion of other available treatment options.
Indications
Who May Need a Penile Implant?
Severe Erectile Dysfunction
Men who consistently cannot achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse.
Failed ED Medicines
Patients who have not achieved satisfactory results from medicines such as sildenafil or tadalafil, or who cannot safely use them.
Failed Injections or Vacuum Devices
A penile prosthesis may be considered when penile injections or vacuum erection devices are ineffective, unsuitable or unacceptable to the patient.
Diabetes or Vascular ED
Long-standing diabetes and vascular disease can damage the nerves and blood vessels involved in erections and may lead to severe erectile dysfunction.
ED After Pelvic or Prostate Surgery
Some patients develop persistent erectile dysfunction after prostate, bladder or pelvic surgery.
Peyronie's Disease With ED
Men with significant penile curvature combined with erectile dysfunction may sometimes benefit from penile prosthesis surgery as part of their treatment.

In many cases, yes. A damaged, malfunctioning or problematic prosthesis can be evaluated for revision or replacement. Revision surgery may be more technically complex because of scar tissue, previous infection or altered anatomy.
