Overview

What Is Male Sexual Dysfunction?

Male sexual dysfunction refers to problems that interfere with normal sexual desire, erection, ejaculation or orgasm. Common conditions include erectile dysfunction (ED), premature ejaculation, delayed or absent ejaculation and reduced sexual desire.

These problems may develop because of blood-vessel disease, diabetes, hormonal imbalance, nerve disorders, medications, previous pelvic surgery or psychological factors such as stress and anxiety. More than one factor may be involved in the same patient.

Important: Persistent sexual dysfunction should be properly evaluated rather than treated with unprescribed medicines or supplements. Erectile dysfunction in particular can sometimes be associated with underlying cardiovascular or metabolic disease.

Diagnosis

How We Diagnose Male Sexual Dysfunction

A detailed assessment helps identify the type of sexual problem and its underlying cause so treatment can be personalised.

  • Medical & Sexual History – reviews erections, libido, ejaculation, orgasm and previous treatments.
  • Physical Examination – evaluates genital, vascular, neurological and hormonal signs.
  • Blood Sugar Testing – checks for diabetes or metabolic problems.
  • Lipid Profile – evaluates cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Testosterone Test – early-morning testosterone may be assessed when indicated.
  • Hormonal Tests – additional tests such as prolactin or LH may be considered in selected patients.
  • Penile Doppler Ultrasound – may evaluate penile blood flow in selected ED cases.
  • Sexual Function Questionnaires – tools such as IIEF/SHIM can help assess erection severity and treatment response.

Treatment

Male Sexual Dysfunction Treatment Options

01

Lifestyle & Risk Factor Management

Improving physical activity, weight, smoking habits, diabetes control and cardiovascular risk factors may improve sexual health and erectile function in appropriate patients.

02

Oral ED Medication

PDE5 inhibitor medicines are recommended as a first-line treatment for erectile dysfunction in appropriate patients after medical evaluation.

03

Premature Ejaculation Treatment

Treatment may include behavioural or psychosexual approaches and appropriate medicines. For acquired premature ejaculation, underlying problems such as erectile dysfunction, anxiety or other medical conditions should also be addressed.

04

Hormonal Treatment

When testing confirms a clinically relevant hormonal problem, appropriate hormonal management may be considered. Testosterone treatment should not be given simply for sexual symptoms without proper evaluation.

05

Penile Injections & Vacuum Devices

Intracavernosal injections or vacuum erection devices may be considered when oral medicines are unsuitable or ineffective.

06

Penile Prosthesis Surgery

A penile implant may be considered for selected men with significant erectile dysfunction who do not respond to or cannot use less-invasive treatments.
