Overview

What Is Urinary Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine caused by problems with bladder control, urinary sphincter function, pelvic floor muscles or the nervous system.

It can affect both men and women and may range from occasional leakage during coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercise to sudden urgency, frequent urination, night-time leakage or continuous dribbling. In men, it may occur after prostate surgery, sphincter weakness or neurological problems, while in women it is commonly associated with childbirth, pelvic floor weakness, menopause, prolapse or overactive bladder.

Urinary incontinence can affect daily activities, sleep, confidence and overall quality of life. The type and severity of leakage can vary significantly from one patient to another.

Important: Urinary incontinence is not simply a normal part of ageing. Proper evaluation helps identify the exact cause and allows treatment to be planned according to the individual condition.

Causes

Causes of Urinary Incontinence in Men

Pelvic Floor Weakness

Weak pelvic muscles can reduce bladder and urethral control.

Overactive Bladder

Sudden bladder contractions can cause urgency and urine leakage.

Nerve Problems

Neurological conditions may interfere with normal bladder control.

Urinary Tract Infection

UTIs can temporarily cause urgency, frequency and leakage.

Age-Related Changes

Bladder and sphincter function may weaken with age.

Previous Surgery

Pelvic, bladder or urinary surgery can sometimes affect continence.

Diagnosis

How We Diagnose Urinary Incontinence

Correct diagnosis helps determine the type, severity and underlying cause of urinary leakage.

  • Medical & Surgical History – reviews urinary symptoms, childbirth, prostate or pelvic surgery.
  • Physical Examination – assesses pelvic floor, genital and neurological function.
  • Urine Test – checks for infection, blood or other abnormalities.
  • Bladder Diary – records fluid intake, urination frequency and leakage episodes.
  • Uroflowmetry – measures urine flow.
  • Post-Void Residual Test – checks urine remaining after bladder emptying.
  • Urodynamic Testing – evaluates bladder pressure, capacity and sphincter function.
  • Cystoscopy – may be required to examine the bladder and urethra.

Treatment

Urinary Incontinence Treatment Options

01

Lifestyle & Bladder Training

Fluid management, weight control, scheduled urination and bladder training may improve mild urinary incontinence.

02

Pelvic Floor Exercises

Pelvic floor muscle training can improve urinary control, particularly in stress incontinence and after prostate surgery.

03

Medications

Medicines may be recommended for overactive bladder and urge incontinence, depending on symptoms and medical history.

04

Female Sling Surgery

A urethral sling may be considered for selected women with stress urinary incontinence to provide additional support to the urethra.

05

Artificial Urinary Sphincter

An Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS) may be considered for men with significant sphincter-related urinary leakage, especially after prostate surgery.

06

Botox for Overactive Bladder

Botulinum toxin injections into the bladder may help selected patients with persistent urgency and urge incontinence.
